Updated: UF bans class trips to Haiti
If you’re a student at the University of Florida, don’t expect any class trips to Haiti anytime soon.
Provost Joe Glover sent out a memo to department heads Friday saying UF will not sanction, sponsor or approve any student trips to Haiti until further notice, due to safety concerns in the aftermath of the Jan. 12 earthquake.
Faculty must get special administrative approval if they plan to go to conduct research or provide help.
“Faculty and staff who do not receive such approval but who nevertheless choose to travel to Haiti on unpaid or annual leave should make clear that they are acting without the approval or sanction of the university and do not represent the university,” the memo states.
The university says the decision was based on an assessment of risk, as well as advice from the federal and state governments.
