A former Broward School Board member is looking to get his old seat back.
Don Samuels, who in 1998 lost his re-election bid to Stephanie Kraft after four terms on the School Board, filed papers Tuesday to run for the seat that Kraft is vacating. Samuels lives in Tamarac.
He joins an ever-growing list of candidates for the northwest Broward spot, including Jaemi Levine of Coral Springs, who ran against Kraft in 2006. Levine filed papers for the seat on Feb. 12.
Also filed to run: Penny McArthur Madden, of Coral Springs; David “Dave” Thomas, of Coral Springs, and Stewart “Stew” Jackson Webster, of Coral Springs.
The election is scheduled for Aug. 24. Five School Board seats are up for grabs, including the seat currently held by Kraft.
Incumbents Jennifer Gottlieb, Phyllis Hope, Ann Murray and Bob Parks all filed to run again for their seats. So far, only Hope [...]

We might be a day late saying happy birthday to the late, great Dr. Seuss (Sorry!), but the students and parents at David Posnack Hebrew Day School were right on time.
Parents brought in books and blankets then settled in—with their children, of course—for a little Seussian fun. They read some of Dr. Seuss’ most well known books—The Cat in the Hat and Horton Hears a Who—as part of “Read Across America Day.”
Theodore Seuss Geisel, who passed away in 1991, was born on March 2, 1904. We thought it might be appropriate to share some of his most memorable quotes.
The below 15 quotes come thanks to The Huffington Post’s tribute. The pictures come thanks to the Posnack school.
Enjoy!

From Staff Writer, Megan O’Matz
Something is odd about Lucille Greene’s job evaluations.
The 2005-2006 performance appraisal for the Broward School District’s director of pupil transportation is EXACTLY the same as the 2006-2007 report, the latest one available.
In the earlier school year, it was written: “Ms. Greene’s strong leadership ability and effective communication skills has earned her the respect of all she comes in contact with.”
In the latter year: “Ms. Greene’s strong leadership ability and effective communication skills has earned her the respect of all she comes in contact with.”
Each year Greene was rated “highly effective” in leadership and customer focus and “effective” in information and analysis, and strategic quality planning.
Each year, under customer focus, the comment field said: “Ms. Greene works well [...]

Gary Miller works at a university that eliminated football back in the 1980s. Would that be an ominous sign for Florida Atlantic University’s stadium project or football if he got hired as president?
He says no.
Miller, who is provost of Wichita State University, is one of three finalists the Board of Trustees is interviewing for the job.
“With regard to the stadium, when I first looked at this I thought it’s going to be a challenge,” he said. “Now, after being here a couple of days, I say, ‘Let’s the build the thing…This is about vitalizing the vision of this, getting done something that’s been considered a long time.”
Miller said Wichita State has been able to keep a strong sports presence by building its baseball and basketball teams.
As for FAU’s greatest challenge, Miller said the university needs a morale boost. He found some pessimism when he met with [...]

Florida Atlantic University could experience growth, both in population and in online classes, if Terry Hickey becomes the new president.
Hickey, provost of the University of Central Florida, interviewed with members of the Board of Trustees Wednesday morning. He told the trustees they can’t expect new money from the state, so they must rely more on tuition. One way to get more money is to get bigger, which increases tuition revenue.
UCF has been one of the country’s fastest growing universities and now has more than 53,000 students, making it the country’s third largest. FAU, which has 28,000 students, has an enrollment plan that calls for growth of less than .9 percent by 2015, based on demographics.
“That’s not going to generate the kind of revenue you’re going to need,” Hickey said. “I would argue you need to try to grow your undergraduate enrollment in a way that makes sense given your capacity.”
That [...]

If you equate early release days in Broward schools with in-class movies, consider yourself on notice – a group of students wants to change up those early dismissal days and make them useful.
The Broward School Board’s student advisers told board members at Tuesday’s meeting that it’s time to take those days and use them for life lessons – from learning how to present yourself at a job interview to how to manage your finances.
“Kids are really learning life skills they can use later on, after they graduate,” said Itai Raz, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
He and fellow adviser Sara Saxner wrote a letter that they gave to board members Tuesday, asking them to consider using at least one early release day a year for “short seminars about various life-skill topics, including, but not limited to: money management skills, interview skills, time management skills, how [...]

Here’s a news nugget from Tuesday’s Broward School Board meeting: High school graduation has a price.
Broward’s high schools are too big to hold graduation in the school’s auditorium. You can’t smoosh all the graduates, friends and family members into the auditorium for the annual spring rite-of-passage.
So, the $363,223 pricetag to be approved by the Board (they haven’t gotten there yet) is not for caps and gowns. It is for space rental.
The district wants to lease Broward Community College’s Omni Auditorium, Florida Atlantic Univeristy’s Teaching Gymnasium and the Bank United Center at the Unversity of Miami.
The gradutes of 2010 will walk across the stage and receive their diplomas from June 3 to June 9.
